Leather Jacket Care: A Guide for Your Coat
A fine leather jacket is not an investment for one season but for a lifetime. Cared for properly, it keeps its beauty and shape for decades and often grows more characterful with time. Good care does not require expensive products; all it requires is understanding the nature of the material. Below is a simple, safe guide drawn from more than 40 years of hand craftsmanship.
Everyday Cleaning: Less but Right
Leather is a living, breathing material and does not need frequent cleaning. To remove surface dust and light marks, gently wipe it with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth.
- Never soak it in water, never machine wash it.
- Do not use solvents, alcohol or household cleaners; these strip the leather's natural oils and colour.
- Wipe in one direction, without pressing hard.
Conditioning, the Heart of Leather Jacket Care
The heart of leather jacket care is periodic conditioning. Over time leather can lose its natural moisture; a suitable leather cream or conditioner keeps it soft and supple.
- Apply the product in a thin layer with a soft cloth.
- Always test first on a hidden spot (for example an inner seam edge).
- Conditioning a few times a year, whenever the leather feels dry, is enough.
Keep Away From Heat and Sun
Leather's greatest enemies are direct heat and prolonged sun. Heat sources such as radiators, heaters or hairdryers dry the leather, crack it and fade its colour.
Keep your jacket in a cool, shaded place. Do not leave it for long periods in a spot that catches direct sun, such as a window or display area.
What to Do When It Gets Wet
If your leather jacket is caught in the rain, do not worry. Correct drying preserves the leather just as it is.
- Blot the excess moisture gently with a soft cloth; do not rub.
- Let it air dry on its own at room temperature, away from heat sources.
- Never force-dry it, never wring it or bend it out of shape.
Storing It Correctly
A leather jacket keeping its shape for years depends largely on how it is stored. Hang it on a broad, padded hanger; thin wire hangers distort the shoulder line.
- Use a breathable cloth cover; never store it in a plastic bag, as plastic traps moisture.
- Keep it in a ventilated wardrobe with space between hangers so it can breathe.
- Before long-term storage, make sure the jacket is completely dry and clean.
Stains and Patina
The first rule with a spot stain: blot to absorb it, never rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and works it into the surface. For grease or serious stains, rather than treating it yourself, take it to a professional leather cleaner.
Remember: genuine leather develops a beautiful patina over the years. Small marks and a deepening of colour are not flaws but the character of your jacket, and they make it unique.
