Fur Coat Size Guide: Choosing the Right Fit and Length
A fine fur coat is not bought for a season; it is an investment meant to last for decades. The first condition for enjoying that investment is choosing the right size and the right length. In a fabric coat, a small sizing mistake can be forgiven. In fur, the set of the shoulders, the sleeve length and the overall silhouette define how the piece carries itself. Drawing on the experience of our Istanbul atelier, established in 1985, this guide walks you through sizing a fur coat, jacket or vest with confidence.
Why sizing works differently in fur
Fur does not stretch and mould to the body the way knitted fabric does. The leather base holds its shape, so the fit must be right from the very first wear. The second difference is layering. Fur is worn on the coldest days of the year, usually over a sweater, a shirt or even a light jacket. When choosing a size, think not only of your body measurements but of everything you will wear underneath.
Our patterns generally run true to size, so the size you wear every day is the right starting point for most models. If you find yourself between two sizes, choose the larger one. In fur, a touch of ease reads as elegance; tightness restricts movement and puts constant strain on the seams, shortening the life of the garment.
Choosing the length: from vest to full-length coat
The right length depends on how you live and on your proportions:
- Fur vest: The most flexible layering piece. Worn over sweaters and jackets, it is the favourite choice for city life and the shoulder seasons.
- Short jacket (hip length): Ideal for active days. We especially recommend it for anyone who drives regularly; it does not bunch up when seated.
- Mid-length coat (above the knee): The balance point between warmth and freedom of movement, at home both day and evening.
- Full-length coat: Maximum warmth and the most dramatic silhouette, made for harsh winters, evening occasions and classic elegance.
Height and build matter too. On petite frames, a coat that sweeps close to the ankle can overwhelm the silhouette; a below-the-knee length usually looks better proportioned. On taller figures, a short jacket highlights the line of the legs, while a long coat gives a commanding presence.
How to check the fit: shoulders, sleeves, chest
When trying a piece on, check three points. The shoulder seam should end exactly where your shoulder bone ends, neither pinching inward nor drooping onto the arm. With your arms relaxed at your sides, the sleeve should cover the wrist bone and leave no gap above a glove. At the chest, a fine sweater should fit comfortably underneath with the coat closed, and there should be no pulling across the back when you stretch your arms forward. Sit down, stand up, raise your arms: a well-fitted fur moves with you.

Frequently asked questions
I am between two sizes. Which should I take? The larger one. Room for layering and freedom of movement always come first in fur.
Will the fur loosen up over time? Not noticeably. The leather base keeps its shape, which is why the fit must be right from the first try.
I drive every day. Which length is practical? A hip-length jacket or a vest. Longer coats fold under you when seated and wear faster.
My measurements do not match standard patterns. Not a problem: share your measurements with us on WhatsApp and we will plan a made-to-measure piece together.
