Shearling & Sheepskin Care: Kuzu Derisi Bakımı Guide
A fine shearling coat is not a single-season purchase but a lifelong investment. Cared for correctly, it keeps its beauty and warmth for decades. These pieces, known in Turkish as kuzu derisi or dublyonka, carry soft wool on one side and suede or leather on the other. Understanding the nature of both faces is the whole of their care. Proper care does not require expensive products; all it asks is that you approach the material with respect.
Knowing Both Faces
Sheepskin is not one material but two complementary surfaces. The inner wool keeps you warm and lets the garment breathe. The outer suede or leather gives the piece its refined texture. Regular, gentle brushing keeps both alive for years.
- Brush the wool side with a soft brush in the direction of the fleece; this keeps it fluffy and lively.
- Refresh the suede or leather outer side lightly with a dry suede brush.
- Brush as if you were stroking the surface, never forcing it.
Everyday Care
Above all, shearling asks for patience and a gentle hand. The single most important rule is simple: this material does not love water or heat. Water and heat permanently ruin both the skin and the wool. For this reason, some methods must never be used.
- Never machine wash.
- Never fully submerge it in water.
- Never heat-dry it (radiator, hair dryer, heater).
As long as you honour these three rules, your piece keeps its shape and softness for years.
Spot Cleaning Stains
When you notice a small mark, there is no need to panic. Treat only that spot, not the whole garment. A barely damp cloth lifts most surface marks gently.
- Dampen the cloth only slightly, never wet; wring out the water.
- Press on the stained area, wiping without rubbing.
- Then leave the piece to air dry at room temperature, away from heat.
If It Gets Wet
Getting caught in the rain is not a disaster, only a situation, and handled correctly it leaves no trace. The key is not to panic and reach for heat.
- Shake the piece out gently to remove excess water.
- Hang it on a broad hanger and let it dry naturally.
- Keep it away from radiators, heaters and direct sunlight.
Storing It Properly
When the season ends, how you store your piece directly determines its lifespan. Sheepskin crushed in a packed wardrobe loses its shape; allowed to breathe, it stays fresh for years.
- Use a broad hanger that supports the shoulders; thin wire distorts the shoulder line.
- Store it in a breathable fabric cover; a plastic bag traps moisture.
- Choose a ventilated spot, away from heat and damp.
Deep Cleaning and the Professional Touch
When it comes to odour, deeply settled dirt or serious stains, do not look for a solution at home. Here the right decision is to trust experienced hands.
- For deep cleaning, turn only to a cleaner who specialises in shearling and leather.
- Picking at stubborn stains with home methods often makes the damage worse.
- Whenever you are unsure, ask before you try.
