Leather Jacket Outfits: A Guide by Colour and Cut

A leather jacket is the one piece of outerwear that changes character with what you wear under it: the same jacket is sporty with a T-shirt, elegant with a silk blouse, calm with knitwear. Three Basic Rules

• Balance the silhouette. If the jacket sits close to the body (biker, double-breasted) the lower half can be relaxed; if the jacket is roomy (oversized) keep the lower half slim and clean. Two roomy pieces swallow each other.
• One accent. Leather already draws the eye with its texture. If you wear a coloured leather jacket, keep everything else calm; if you wear black, give the accent to a single accessory.
• Contrast the textures. Leather works best with soft textures: cashmere knits, silk, fine cotton, wool trousers. Shiny fabric over leather starts to tire the eye.

Black Leather Jacket Outfits

A black leather jacket is the hardest-working piece in the wardrobe. Daytime: dark jeans, a white T-shirt, white sneakers. Office: black tailored trousers, a fine turtleneck, pointed shoes; a double-breasted or blazer cut stands in for a jacket here. Evening: a biker cut over a black dress or a silk blouse and skirt, with gold earrings. Soften black with cream and beige bodies; sharpen it with an all-black outfit.

Brown and Camel Leather Jacket Outfits

A brown leather jacket is warmer and less formal than black. Its most natural partners are cream, beige, ecru and khaki; light blue jeans and a white shirt also carry brown. Suede-faced brown jackets sit at the centre of autumn outfits; pair them with wool trousers and leather boots. Do not hesitate to wear brown and black together, just keep shoes and bag in the same tone.

Red, Burgundy and Coloured Leather Jackets

The rule for a coloured leather jacket is single: the jacket is the accent, the rest is background. A red leather jacket works with black, navy and white bodies; a burgundy leather jacket with grey, cream and dark green; a green leather jacket with beige, brown and denim. Orange and metallic tones are enough on their own for evening outfits. Choose accessories a shade darker than the jacket or in a neutral, never in the same colour.

White and Cream Leather Jackets

A white leather jacket belongs to spring and summer evenings: over light jeans, linen trousers or a summer dress. • Double-breasted and fitted: stands in for a blazer; carries from office to evening with tailored trousers, a pencil skirt and a silk blouse.
• Blazer: the most formal leather outfit with a shirt, tailored trousers and loafers. It relaxes when worn with a T-shirt.
• Belted: the belt defines the waist; wear wide-leg trousers or a long skirt underneath.
• Fur-trimmed: the fur collar is already the accent, so skip scarves and large necklaces; keep the body plain.

Men's Leather Jacket Outfits

For men, a black biker jacket finds its classic form with dark jeans, a white or grey T-shirt and leather boots. Brown and suede jackets give a calmer outfit with a shirt and chinos; navy and khaki jackets sit naturally with denim. In spring the jacket is carried over dresses and skirts for the evening chill. Common Mistakes

• Roomy trousers under a roomy jacket: the silhouette disappears.
• A second strong colour with a coloured leather jacket: jacket and body compete.
• Buying the jacket too small: leather gives, but sleeve length and shoulders do not change; if the measurements do not match the chart, choose made-to-measure.
• Pairing with shiny fabric: leather works with matte textures.
