What Is Mink Fur? Quality, Colour, Price and Care

Mink is the most sought-after and best-known fur in the world: its short, dense, silky hair, its lightness and its durability make it the first pelt that comes to mind when people say "a classic fur coat". This guide explains what mink is, how to judge its quality, the colour and cut options, what drives its price and how to care for it, from the workshop's point of view.

What is mink?

Mink is the pelt of a small mammal from the weasel family. The fur has two layers: glossy, straight guard hairs on the outside and a soft, dense underfur beneath. Together they give a smooth sheen and a thick, heat-holding texture. Because the hair is short, mink garments are not voluminous like fox; they follow the body and look refined, which is why mink is the most popular choice for both long coats and short jackets.

How to judge mink quality

• Density: When you stroke the fur against the grain, the underfur should hide the leather completely and spring straight back. Sparse underfur signals a lower grade.
• Sheen: Good mink reflects light softly and evenly; a dull or patchy shine means the hair is worn.
• Leather suppleness: The pelt should feel soft, light and flexible; stiff or crackling leather has dried out.
• Pelt joins: In quality workmanship the pelts are aligned along the spine line, the seams are invisible from the outside and the pattern flows without interruption.

Natural and dyed mink

Natural mink is the pelt's own colour: black, dark brown, brown and beige are the most common; white and grey natural pelts are rarer. Dyed mink is coloured in a special process, which is how navy, red and blue shades are obtained. In our collection the largest group is black and natural tones; white and grey mink are chosen for special occasions. Keep the rule simple: natural and black for everyday wear, white or a colour for a single special day.

Cuts: coat, three-quarter coat, jacket, gilet

Mink's short hair suits every cut. A long coat is the warmest and most striking option; it is limited in number in our collection and can also be made to measure. A knee-length coat is the most comfortable for daily wear and forms the largest group in the collection. A short mink jacket is worn every day with trousers and dresses; its lightness makes it ideal for the car and city life. A mink gilet is a layering piece, most often worn over a cashmere sweater or a leather jacket. Hooded mink models exist but are few; mink is mostly worked with a classic collar.

What determines the price of mink?

Mink prices span a wide band, and five factors explain the difference:

• Whole pelts: coats made from full pelts are worth more than pieced constructions.
• Hair quality: dense underfur and glossy guard hair define the top grade.
• Length and cut: a long coat needs many more pelts; gilets and short jackets form the more accessible band.
• Natural or dyed: rare natural tones (white, grey) usually cost more.
• Workmanship and lining: stitch density, lining quality and closure details all show in the price.

Mink, fox or sable?

Mink is light, flat and durable; it is the first choice for a classic coat you will wear every day. Fox is voluminous and showy; it makes a stronger impression on special occasions but is heavy for daily wear. Sable is softer and rarer than mink and forms the very top segment. Caring for mink

Mink asks for little care: in summer store it in a cool, dark, airy place on a wide hanger; avoid plastic bags and warm compartments. If it gets wet, let it dry at room temperature and then smooth the hair with your hand in its natural direction. Never spray perfume directly onto the fur.
