Mink Coat Prices: What Drives the Cost

"How much does a mink coat cost?" has no single answer; it has a range. Two mink coats in the same window can differ several times in price because of length, pelt quality, colour, how the coat is constructed and how many hours of handwork it took. This guide explains what drives mink coat prices, seen from an atelier that has made fur in Istanbul since 1985. The figures in the table are calculated from the pieces actually in stock in our store, so they are always current.

The short answer: current mink coat prices

The table below shows the lowest, highest and median price for each fur family in our collection. Seeing mink next to sable, fox and astrakhan also shows where mink sits in the fur hierarchy.

MaterialIn stockPrice rangeMedian
Sable17$663 - $8,040$5,226
Mink53$784 - $5,025$3,015
Fox33$181 - $2,613$444
Astrakhan38$155 - $1,266$379
Rex and lamb65$131 - $804$342
Cashmere and wool720$111 - $1,646$241
Genuine leather and suede891$91 - $1,105$241

The table is calculated from the pieces actually in stock and is refreshed with every update. It uses the body material: a wool coat with a fur trim counts as wool, not fur.

The table uses the body material: a cashmere coat with a mink collar counts as cashmere, not mink. You can browse every model on the mink coats page.

Six things that drive the price of a mink coat

1. Length and pelt count

The main cost in any fur is the number of pelts. Between a short mink jacket and a below-the-knee coat the pelt count multiplies, so of two models of the same quality the longer one is clearly more expensive. Gilets and short jackets are the most accessible way into mink.

2. Pelt quality

Mink pelts are graded by density, sheen, evenness of hair length and the fineness of the leather. Female pelts are smaller, lighter and silkier, so a coat needs more of them; male pelts are larger and fuller. How to judge quality by hand and eye is covered in what is mink fur.

3. Colour: natural, pastel, dyed

Natural mink is the pelt's own colour; natural brown, black and silver are obtained without dyeing. Pastel is a soft natural tone between light brown and beige. Rare natural tones such as white, pearl and silver are harder to source and usually cost more. Dyed mink gives colours such as lilac, terracotta, blue or caramel; dyeing does not make a pelt cheaper, and colour is mostly a matter of taste.

4. Let-out or skin-on-skin?

In let-out work each pelt is cut into narrow diagonal strips and sewn back together to lengthen it. The result is a light coat that flows unbroken from collar to hem, but it takes many hours of handwork and is the most expensive method. In skin-on-skin work whole pelts are joined in horizontal rows; the look is sportier and the labour shorter. The difference between whole pelts and pieced construction is explained in what determines fur coat price.

5. Collar, hood and trim

A mink coat with a sable, lynx or fox collar adds the cost of that fur to the price. A hood also means extra pelts and pattern work. This is why sable-trimmed and fox-trimmed mink coats sit in the upper band of our collection.

6. Handwork

Patterned work such as checkerboard inlay, pelts aligned along the back line, invisible seams and lining quality all show in the price. In mass production one pattern is cut hundreds of times; in the atelier each coat is cut individually and checked before it leaves.

How to judge value

  • Lift a corner of the lining and look inside: regular, parallel seam lines are a sign of good work.
  • Stroke the hair against the grain; it should spring straight back and the underfur should hide the leather.
  • Hold the coat: well-dressed mink is light for its length and the leather is supple.
  • Check that the label names the body fur and the trim fur separately.

Care and lifespan: spreading the price over years

Mink is known as one of the most durable furs; with proper care it can be worn for decades, and that changes how the price looks. The habits are simple: a broad-shouldered hanger, a breathable cover and a cool wardrobe; if it gets wet, shake it and let it dry away from heat; never spray perfume directly onto the fur. Details are in the fur coat care and storage guide.

Made-to-measure mink

If you fall outside the size chart, or the length or colour you want is not in stock, we make the same model to your measurements. The price follows the pelts, length and details you choose. The process is described on the made-to-measure page. You can try the models in our Antalya (Kepez) and Istanbul (Zeytinburnu) boutiques, or order online with worldwide shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do mink coat prices vary so much?

Length and pelt count, pelt quality, colour, construction (let-out or skin-on-skin), collar and hood details and handwork all set the price. A short mink jacket and a long let-out coat can differ several times over.

Is natural or dyed mink more expensive?

Pelt quality matters more than colour. Rare natural tones such as white, pearl and silver usually cost more; black and natural brown are the most common and most timeless choices.

How long does a mink coat last?

Mink is one of the most durable furs. Stored on a broad hanger in a breathable cover in a cool place, and dried away from heat when wet, it can be worn for decades.

Can I order a mink coat made to measure?

Yes. Because we have produced in our own Istanbul atelier since 1985, we can make models to your measurements, length and colour. The 14-day right of withdrawal does not apply to made-to-measure orders.
